
What Happens to Natural Dye Plants in India When Their Landscapes Change?
The colours in India’s traditional textiles often begin far from the loom. They are extracted from flowers, leaves and roots that grow in local soil, rainfall and seasons. Saffron produces warm golden shades, indigo creates deep blue, while Indian madder and chay root yield different tones of red. But as the climate changes, the landscapes that nurture these colours are also becoming less predictable. What happens to a craft when its colour can no longer grow as it once did?
This can directly impact rural craft communities who rely on these plants for their living.

How Climate Shifts Disrupt India’s Natural Dyes
Natural dye plants are more than sources of colour. They support biodiversity and sustain rural craft practices passed down from one generation to the next. Each plant, however, depends on environmental conditions.
In the north, Kashmir’s saffron grows mainly on rain-fed karewa lands, where flowering depends on a strict balance of autumn temperature and moisture. However, climate warming has accelerated; temperature increases rose from 0.1°C per decade (1901–2014) to 0.3°C per decade (1951–2021). This warming disrupts the delicate microclimate, causing dry conditions during September and October that delay sprouting. Consequently, production has plummeted. Between 1997 and 2015, cultivated land shrank from 5,707 to 3,674 hectares, while annual yield dropped from 15.95 to 9.6 metric tons, demonstrating how severely evolving climate shifts threaten the region’s economic stability.
In the west, indigo leaves have long supplied the blue pigment essential for traditions like Ajrakh block printing. However, changing environments threaten this craft. Experiments on Indigofera tinctoria show that severe water stress drastically restricts growth, triggering a 25% reduction in leaf dry mass. Because the blue colour comes entirely from natural substances stored inside these leaves, shrinking leaf growth means there is less raw material to ferment. Consequently, this biological drop can affect the availability of dye material for heritage artisans.
In the east, Indian madder (Manjistha) produces red, rust, and brown shades from its roots. Research shows that rainfall during the wettest month dictates where this plant can grow. Because its red pigments rely entirely on natural substances created inside the roots, altered monsoons directly damage root health. Consequently, changing rainfall patterns ruin the natural dye supply and shrink the plant's suitable geographic habitat.
Towards India’s eastern coast, chay root once grew widely in sandy soils, providing the essential red pigment for traditions like Kalamkari textile art. Its long roots need loose coastal soil and careful cultivation. As eastern coastal India faces cyclones, humid heat and other connected climate hazards, these fragile growing environments may become increasingly difficult to maintain. This is a climate-risk inference based on the plant’s coastal habitat and documented regional hazards, rather than a directly measured decline in chay-root cultivation.
Protecting natural dyes requires more than preserving an old recipe. It means conserving the soil, water, plants and knowledge that make each colour possible. When we protect these living landscapes, we also protect the hands, histories and textile traditions that carry India’s colours forward.
